Clean Tech

Town of Halton Hills supports sustainability through its Strategic Plan, Official Plan, Community Sustainability Strategy and numerous other Town strategies, plans and initiatives.  In February, 2016, Council endorsed the Blue Dot Movement by approving and signing the "made-in- Halton Hills" Blue Dot Movement Motion.

The Blue Dot Movement is a grassroots movement whereby individuals, groups and municipalities are recognizing the right to a healthy environment. This healthy environment includes the right to:

  • Breathe clean air;
  • Drink and access clean water;
  • Eat safe and healthy food;
  • Access nature;
  • Know about pollutants and contaminants released into the local environment; and
  • Participate in decision-making that will affect the environment.

Endorsement of this Movement translates to Town of Halton Hills being particularly interested in growth of the Clean Tech business sector.  The Town is leading by example through its own operations and policies (i.e. Corporate Sustainable Building Policy, Green Development Standards, Mayor's Community Energy Plan) to strengthen its competitive advantage in clean, renewable energy and sustainable development; and in climate change adaptation and mitigation research, development, innovation and economic development policies that address the pressing challenges of climate change.

Canada's cleantech sector ranks fourth in the world and first in the G20 according to the 2017 Global Cleantech Innovation Index (GCII). Canada jumped ahead of the U.S., Israel, and the U.K., climbing from a seventh place global ranking in 2014.  And, Canada's established manufacturing industry is among the world's top 6 in terms of helping support cleantech commercialization.  Halton Hills boasts over 120 green tech businesses employing 2000 workers.

A wealth of information on the Cleantech sector can be found on the Ontario Investment Office website.
