The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on our community, our province, and the world. The Town of Halton Hills has been taking proactive, decisive and meaningful actions to respond to the crisis by supporting residents, businesses and organizations. As businesses slowly begin to re-open, the focus of the Town’s Economic Support and Recovery Task Force has shifted to supporting an economic restart, while recognizing public health as being the priority.

On June 15, 2020, the Province of Ontario announced that Halton Region, along with other municipalities in the Greater Toronto Area, will enter the second stage of recovery as of June 19, 2020. Under Stage Two, restaurants, bars, and other food and drink establishments can open for dining in outdoor areas only, such as patios, curbside, parking lots, and adjacent premises. In anticipation of Halton Hills entering into the second stage of reopening, the Task Force has developed the ‘Al Fresco in the Hills’ initiative to assist local restaurants, bars, and other food and drink establishments in mitigating the impacts that physical distancing and other public health directives will have on their businesses.

Al Fresco in the Hills will provide restaurants, bars, and other food and drink establishments with opportunities for additional dining space to help reduce revenue losses caused by necessary compliance with COVID-19 regulations. Al Fresco in the Hills will take a two-phased approach to allow time for business to adjust their pre-COVID-19 operations. Phase One: Temporary Patio Program will allow restaurants, bars, and other food and drink establishments to operate temporary patios until October 31, 2020. Phase Two: Outdoor Dining Program is currently under development and is intended to allow for additional outdoor dining in larger public spaces, accommodating multiple restaurants, bars, and other food and drink establishments.
