The District of Wenjiang, population 600,000, is a suburb of Chengdu, one of the fastest-growing cities in China, in the Sichuan province located near the western border. By signing a sister-city agreement with Wenjiang in 2016, Town of Halton Hills is thinking and acting beyond our boundaries to benefit both communities and both countries. The Wenjiang Action Plan contains 22 key actions covering five areas of mutual interest:
1. Economic Development and Foreign Direct Investment
3. Culture & Arts
4. Sustainability and Renewable Energy and
Building a strong relationship with Wenjiang will lead to future bilateral economic opportunities for both Halton Hills and Wenjiang.
During the week of October 23-28, 2017, Halton Hills conducted its inaugural Wenjiang Festival, a week-long festival of cultural events including visual arts, performing arts, dance classes, cooking classes and more. See some of the highlights in photos here. On November 17, Halton Hills in partnership with Halton Region and Town of Oakville, hosted a sold-out "Learn to do Business in China" business development event. These elements of the Action Plan are tangible examples of how the Town takes a global and strategic approach to economic development and sustainability (thinking globally), while taking meaningful local action (acting locally) to contribute to a better quality of life.
